27 WA Womens Football League players will join together next week to form Team WA, as they head to Cairns, Queensland for the 2013 AFL Women’s National Championships.
The WA State Open squad will travel from the 14th – 23rd June for the Championships under the guidance of Head Coach, Neil Mildenhall.
WA will be out to play their best football and ultimately beat rival state Victoria to bring home victory back to their home state.
WA, NSW, QLD and ACT will each play three games throughout week, with all Division One games of the Championships being played at Cazaly’s Stadium, Cairns.
Head Coach Neil Mildenhall was confident the team would play well, and that the players were in good condition having been training since last October.
“We have worked really hard on our fitness and despite some major injuries to several of our seasoned players ,we have a great mix of youth and experience” Mildenhall said.
Accompanying the squad to Cairns is Female High Performance Manager, Alison Moore, who viewed the group of players as a strong collection.
“With 12 girls selected in this year’s AFL Draft, the current Debbie Lee medallist, several previous All Australian players and some recent All Australian U18 players included in the team – WA will perform well.”
Team WA will play competitively to ensure a place in the Grand Final, hoping to place one better than the 2011 Championships when they were unable to beat Victoria to claim the victory in the Grand Final.
WA’s fixtures are as follows:
Tuesday 18th June: WA v NSW 11.15am (AEST)
Wednesday 19th June: VIC v WA 2.15pm(AEST)
Friday 21st June: QLD v WA 4.20pm (AEST).
The 2013 AFL Women’s Championship finals will be played on Saturday 22nd June.
