Swan Districts will be aiming for their first women’s premiership since aligning with the WAFL club five years ago and suffering the heartbreak of Grand Final losses in 2008 and 2010.
They will come up against a dominant force in women’s football when they meet Coastal Titans, who have played in every Grand Final since joining the competition 10 years ago and won six premierships in total.
Titans will be aiming for another pair of back-to-back flags on Sunday and will be full of confidence after defeating Swans 7.8 (50) to 3.4 (22) in the Second Semi-Final, despite Swans finishing on top of the ladder.
Swans bounced back with a 29-point win in last weekend’s Preliminary Final against East Fremantle and will look to capitalise on their second chance this Sunday.
Swan Districts star Chelsea Randall and Coastal Titans star Kiara Bowers, whoe shared the honours as dual winners of the WAWFL’s Fairest and Best Dhara Kerr Medal with 24 votes each, will be key players for their respective sides.
Both players, pictured, were selected in the top 20 of the inaugural AFL Women’s Draft earlier this year and represented Melbourne Football Club at the MCG in the first ever AFL sanctioned women’s match.
Randall returned to star for Swan Districts in the WAWFL and Bowers did likewise for Coastal Titans, seeing both teams claim the top two spots on the ladder.
Now they are preparing to lead their teams into a highly anticipated Grand Final clash at Brownes Stadium on Sunday, August 25.
This time there can only be one winner.
The prospect of Randall returning after being injured in the first quarter of the Semi-Final will add to their hopes.
Randall, who was selected at number three in the AFL Women’s Draft, is a key player for her side along with fellow draftees Kara Donnellan and Kellie-Marie Gibson.
Donnellan starred through the midfield and kicked two goals to be named Swans’ best in the Preliminary Final, while Gibson has provided great drive from half back all season.
For Titans, number 19 draft pick Kiara Bowers could hold the key as a talented small forward capable of playing through the midfield.
Fellow draftees Brooke Whyte, Renee Forth and Leah Mascall will also be important players for Titans as they aim to repeat their Semi-Final win on Sunday.
During the season, the score was tied at one win each, with Titans victorious at home by 11 points in the first encounter and Swans responding with a seven-point win at Bassendean to set the scene for a thrilling Grand Final encounter.
Coastal Titans and Swan Districts will also clash in the Reserves Grand Final on Sunday and a similar result is expected.
Both sides lost to each other once during the season and finished level on top of the ladder, with Titans edging Swans out only by percentage.
Coastal Titans were convincing 45-point winners in the Second Semi-Final but Swans have a second chance after defeating East Fremantle in the Preliminary Final last weekend.
In the Youth Girls Grand Final, the Peel Thunderbirds and South Fremantle will be aiming to win the inaugural Rogers Cup in the first year of full competition for the under 17 age group.
Thunderbirds were undefeated during the season but upset by South Fremantle in the Semi-Finals. Both sides will be boosted by the return of State 16s Schoolgirls from WA’s winning National Championships side.
