The Round 14 WA Women’s Football League match of the round is one of Western Australia’s most traditional football rivalries, East Fremantle vs South Fremantle at East Fremantle, Oval this Saturday night.
The WAFL Fremantle Derby stretches back over a hundred years and has provided some of the greatest games in football history.
In more recent times, the WAWFL clubs have also had their chance to play for bragging rights in a game that's ear marked from the day fixtures are released.
While geographically close, the two teams seasons have been at opposite ends of the spectrum as East Fremantle – who are in third place – are preparing for finals, while their cross town rivals are looking at a long offseason.
Form can mean little in derbies, however, and South Fremantle would love nothing more than to interrupt East Fremantle’s finals preparation with just two rounds remaining.
If they are to get the upset they will need to quell the influence of the number four pick in 2014 AFL Women’s Draft Melissa Caulfield, who kicked 6 goals when the sides met in Round 5.
East Fremantle won that day by 66 points, and inflicted even more pain on South’s when the teams met again in Round 11, dishing out a 77 point thumping.
If East Fremantle were to make it a clean sweep and defeat the Bulldogs this weekend it would secure them third place on the ladder with a game to spare.
Having already beaten top of the ladder Coastal Titans once they would be confident they can match it with any side at the business end of the season and would be well poised with a third placed finish.
Derbies are anything but predictable though, and with no finals on the horizon South Fremantle will be pumped to put a dent in the hopes of their opposition.
Bounce down for the derby is at a special time of 5:15pm this Saturday night at East Fremantle Oval following on from the WAFL league game.
