Swan Districts secure a place in the WAWFL Division One grand final after a 70 point win defeating the Coastal Titans at Dianella Open Space yesterday afternoon.
Finishing on a final score of 3.6.24, accuracy cost the Coastal Titans the game with Swan Districts dominating 14.10.94.
In previous games between the sides there has been no more than a six point lead but with the Coastal Titans only scoring their first goal in the second quarter, Swan Districts took a strong lead from the start.
“In the first half we were really impressed, but we weren’t complacent and we came out again fresh and kept on kicking goals,” said Swan Districts captain Kara Donnellan.
In the first quarter Swan Districts had a 29-point lead, with the Coastal titans on only two points.
Swan Districts’s half-time tally of 77-points included twelve goals and five points, but the Coastal Titans were unable to close the gap with a score of eleven points including one goal and five behinds.
Earlier in the season the Coastal Titans beat the Swan Districts by one goal, but when the teams met again the Swan Districts came from behind with a two point lead.
“They are a fantastic team, they’ll bounce back no doubt about that,” said Kara Donnellan.
Coastal Titans captain Lauren Stammers said the game went away from its normal track, leaving the team with a disappointing result on the scoreboard.
“We trained well, we thought we were ready, just sometimes it’s not your day.”
“They were harder, they were faster, they wanted it more and I guess that that’s just a mentality we need to get better at over the next couple of weeks.”
Despite their loss the Coastal Titans will play in next week’s preliminary final for another chance to win the premiership.
“They’ve got a tough opponent next week that will knock them around, which will be good in our favor, but you never know what’s going to happen in finals footy,” said Donnellan.
Peel progressed to next week’s preliminary final against the Coastal Titans with an eleven point lead over East Fremantle yesterday afternoon, also at Dianella Open Space.
“We’ve got lots of work to do next week. Peel are a young team and a really good team so we’ve got to be ready for them,” said Stammers.
The premiership could mean a second in a row win for Swan Districts or a seventh flag record for the Coastal Titans.
“I’m pretty confident that we can get the job done next week,” said Stammers. “I believe in my girls and I expect us to get in there in two weeks time.”
Swan Districts have earnt next week off, progressing to the grand final on the 31st of August held at Joondalup Arena.
