Cook and Morgan celebrate umpiring milestones in WAWFLSunday, August 24, 2014 - 8:08 PM
The WA Women’s Football League would like to congratulate Des Morgan and Graeme Cook on their milestone achievement in umpiring 100 games for the WAWFL.
Starting his umpiring career in 1978, Des began with the South Suburban Murray National Football League and has enjoyed his 34 years of officiating. When Des was asked to umpire in the female’s competitions in May of 2010, Des jumped at the opportunity and hasn’t looked back.
Also playing the role as Female Competitions Umpire Coordinator, Des encourages and promotes umpiring within the WA Women’s Football League and the WAFC Youth Girls.
“I enjoy seeing the skills that some women have, some would even show up the men and it is good to do something different than umpiring men games all the time” Des said.
“Get down any Sunday and see the skills and the way they go in and get the ball”.
After a knee reconstruction that ended his playing career, Graeme transitioned from playing to umpiring in 1997. Graeme was asked for his services in the WAWFL when umpires were supplied by teams and has been hooked ever since.
Graeme’s advice to anyone interested in umpiring within the female competitions is that women want to be treated exactly the same as the men, and they play just as hard as them.
When asked what he enjoys about umpiring the girls, Graeme’s said that female football is always played in good spirit.
The WA female football community would like to congratulate and thank these two passionate umpires who have dedicated many of their weekends to support our female competitions.
