By the slimmest of margins, a single point was all it took for the Coastal Titans to solidify themselves a spot in the 2016 WAWFL Reserves Grand Final as they defeated East Fremantle in an absolute heart-stopper, winning 2.5 (17) to 2.4 (16).

After virtually only minutes of play, it soon became clear that this game would go down to the absolute final wire as one low scoring affair to remember.

The focal point of East Fremantle’s intense game plan was their ability to hold up so well in defence. Despite the Titans dominance in the inside 50 count, they were unable to do any real scoreboard damage in what culminated to be one of the lowest scoring, yet highly contested matches of 2016.

It would be fair to say that many were stunned to see that by half time only one goal had been scored between both sides, a rarity in modern football – but that score didn’t tell the real story, that the fierce intensity, commitment and desperation of the contest from both sides was as good as it had been all season.

The Sharks were the side that hadn’t scored a single goal to half time, until Maisie Glen put them on the goal-kicking scoreboard in the opening minutes of the third term. Tegan Davidson followed the trend by kicking the Sharks next goal to put them in front for the first time all game.

The intensity of the game was matched with the louder-than-ever crowd at Lathlain Park.

Heading into the final term 4 points ahead, the Sharks looked to have sealed the win, until a 50m penalty helped Titan Danielle Fagents to perfectly slot her sides final winning goal in the dying minutes.

Following this and with little time remaining, the Sharks pushed hard forward, quickly and desperately, but could only manage to score a single behind which still left them one point behind – the Titans held on, running out the clock as one point winners.

East Fremantle can head out of season 2016 with their heads held high, whilst the Titans will regroup and take on minor premiers Joondalup Falcons in shapes up to be an unmissable reserves grand finale.
