Angels spread their wings by Sandra Argese

There’s no doubt that the Perth Angels turned up the heat for their first home match of 2017, handing East Perth a 108 point reality check at Carlisle Park on Sunday afternoon.

While there was nothing quite royal about East Perth’s performance across the four terms, this Angel resurgence no doubt declared and confirmed their growing presence in the league.

While a four goal third term and five goal fourth term were impressive for the Angels, it was their stellar second quarter domination that set the foundations for a win that’ll be talked about for years to come, with seven unanswered majors. Heading into the main break up 53 points and without even conceding a single point, not once did they look threatened or in danger of losing.

A dangerous ball magnet for each of the four terms, Tamika Watterston was unstoppable up forward and exuded class all round, finishing with six superb majors and collection of contested marks to her name. Aleisha Duncan followed suit, banging on five show-stopping majors as a goal kicking machine for the home side. Hayley Thompson got in on the excitement with two to her name, whilst Carolyn Ruoss and Rachel Ashley contributed one goal each.

For a team starring down a goalless barrel by half time, the Royals momentarily redeemed themselves with an earned first, and eventual only, major for the game courtesy of a set shot from Katrina Jetta early in the third term.

But in a case of raining goals, Perth could do no wrong – the damage had already been done at this point.

Throughout the day, Perth’s defence was superb – nothing was let past them. Not a single behind was even rushed through; the Royals finished with just the one goal to their name.

Amy Chinnery dominated the hitouts for Perth – as such, her teammates had no problems swallowing the ball from her effective ruck work, whilst Lea Caccamo powered through the game as a surging ball carrier; efficient in disposal and impressive around the ground.

Above all, the Royals simply had no answers for the dominant angels, who flexed their muscles with smart ball movement, effective goal assists, accurate disposal and confidence surging inside forward 50.

NEXT WEEK
Heading into round 5 without a win in season 2017, the Royals will look to change that stat as they line up against South Fremantle, who’ll also be on the hunt for their first 2017 win. The Bulldogs are coming off a 67 point disappointing round 4 loss to the Coastal Titans, so both teams will look to redeem themselves. Meanwhile, Perth enjoy a bye week off.
