With 2016 marking the WAWFL’s 29th year since establishment, round one of the season couldn’t come any quicker as female players around Perth count down the sleeps. This year, the WAWFL competition will comprise of nine Reserves teams and six League teams.

Round one of the 2016 Reserves season kicks off this Sunday with a grand final rematch between the Joondalup Falcons and Claremont Piranhas at HBF Arena, Joondalup.

With the home ground advantage to start the season, the Joondalup players donning red and blue jumpers will come out firing, looking to start their campaign in full force against the Piranhas who stole premiership glory from them in their last encounter.

This weekend will also showcase a WA first, as the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers both host female teams to play in an AFL Curtain Raiser before the Western Derby. This exciting game will see an inspiring number of our League players take to the field, and as such, the League competition will start a week later on Sunday 17th April.

In similar fashion to the Reserves, round one for the League division will also host grand final rematch as the Swan Districts host Coastal Titans at Steel Blue Oval.  In what will be a showcase game, the players will play under lights at 5pm, directly after the men’s Swan Districts v Subiaco WAFL game.

With Coastal Titans securing the Premiership by 24 points last season, this fixture  will see the Titans play against their fiercest rival to kick start their campaign as they look toward securing back-to-back premierships.

Enjoying a home territory an advantage for the Swans, the girls in black and white will be looking for retribution and a win from their first game of the season.

With the 2017 female AFL competition edging ever closer, 2016 is sure to be a fantastic year for WA female football.

Good luck to all teams playing in round one, and a special mention to all Youth Girls playing in their first senior games this year.
