Women’s League Premiers are Sharks and Bulldogs
East Fremantle claimed the WAWFL Division 1 Premiership with a fourteen point win over Coastal Titans at Eftel Oval. In an even first half Coastal Titans, the defending Premiers, started brightly and dominated the first quarter. Amy Cotterell provided great drive through the midfield to give the Titans a 19 point lead over the Sharks. East Fremantle hit back in the second quarter through some hard running by Leah Kaslar and Sharon Wong who combined brilliantly with Kirby Bentley to drive East forward. It was not until the third quarter that the Sharks pulled away despite some strong defensive marking in a sweeping role by Titan’s Krystle Rivers. Titans had a twenty point deficit to overcome deep into the second half and while they narrowed the final margin to fourteen it was the Sharks who claimed the win. The grand final win was the first for coach Brett Regan in his inaugural year at the club while Sharon Wong claimed the Louise Knitter medal for Best on Ground. On a disappointing day for the Titans, looking to claim back to back titles they farewelled the retiring Deanne Coates. Current back to back WAWFL Fairest and Best (jointly in 2009) 'Coatesy' has enjoyed a long and successful WAWFL career. Coates' standing throughout the women's game was evident as she received accolades from team mates and opponents during the post-match presentations.

South Fremantle Bulldogs, coached by former AFL player, Scott Chisholm, claimed their first premiership title in Division 2 following a replay of the 2007 grand final. Eftel was awash with red and white as the Bulldogs overcame the Joondalup Falcons in the grand final. It was a closely contested game with the lead changing hands several times. South Fremantle pulled away in the final quarter with Chae-Lee Salbie and Jess Aspinall (with 3 goals) proving too agile in front of goals, to claim the win. Joondalup received great service from Laura Schelfhout in the ruck but when she was rested, South Fremantle gained the ascendency in the midfield and at stoppages. Despite the best efforts of Tammy Mort and Sabrina Moro to give Joondalup the advantage, they could not overcome the relentless chasing and tackling of the South Freo girls. Emilee Chamberlain topped a memorable day for the Bulldogs, claiming the medal for Fairest and Best on the ground.
